Surry County’s New YMCA Plan: A Pool, Community Space, and a Look Ahead

Living in a rural community can mean having room to breathe—and putting a few extra miles on the car when it is time for a workout, swim lesson, or organized activity. That is why Surry County’s planned YMCA deserves a closer look.

The project could give residents another place to exercise, learn, and spend time together close to home. Here is what the official plans say, what is coming next, and why it matters when you think about life in Surry County.

A new facility on Enos Farm Drive

The county’s latest financing notice describes an approximately 44,615-square-foot facility at 5 Enos Farm Drive. The building would be county-owned and leased to the YMCA of the Virginia Peninsulas. Alongside YMCA recreation and wellness activities, the organization would provide parks and recreation services for county residents.

The next public milestone is a hearing on October 5, 2026, at 6 p.m. in the General District Courtroom at the Surry County Government Center, 45 School Street. The Economic Development Authority will consider proposed revenue bond financing of up to $25 million. That is a proposed financing ceiling, not a statement that the bonds have already been issued or that final construction costs are settled. Read the county’s public hearing notice.

Yes, indoor swimming is part of the vision

The YMCA’s January public presentation identifies indoor aquatics as a major community priority, including water safety, swim lessons, recreational swimming, and adult aquatic activities. It also highlights youth development, healthy living, social connections, and gathering places.

Draft renderings on the YMCA’s project page show an aquatics area, indoor track, lobby, and common spaces. These are planning illustrations; they should not be read as a guarantee that every detail will appear exactly as pictured.

Specific class schedules, membership costs, registration dates, and the final program lineup will be details to watch as the opening approaches. The January information-session presentation explains the community needs behind the proposal.

When could the Surry YMCA open?

The YMCA’s published timeline lists construction beginning in fall 2026 and a projected fall 2027 opening. Those are planning targets, not a confirmed opening day. The published schedule alone does not establish that construction has started.

Why this belongs in a conversation about real estate

A house search is also a search for a daily routine. Where would you exercise? How far would you drive for activities? Where could you meet people after moving somewhere new?

My take: a well-used community facility could make rural living more convenient for people who value those activities. The real benefit would be measured in everyday use—whether the location, hours, fees, and programs work for residents.

That does not translate into an automatic increase in home prices. A particular home’s appeal still depends on its condition, location, price, and the buyer’s needs. A future amenity is one piece of the picture, and buyers should evaluate the community as it exists today while keeping an eye on what is planned.

Thinking about calling Surry County home?

Put the YMCA on your list of local developments to follow. Then look at the practical details of each property, from your commute and internet service to the places you expect to visit every week.

If you are considering buying or selling in Surry County, I would love to help you put those pieces together. Connect with Kelly Reider to talk about your next move.
